  • As we set our sights on a more cohesive future, the significance of honoring the distinguished figures from our past and understanding their principles has never been more crucial. This Monday, February 19, 2024, holds special significance as it is recognized as Presidents' Day. Originally established as a national holiday in 1885 to commemorate President George Washington, it has evolved into a day celebrated in tribute to all U.S. presidents, past and present. Beyond its origins, Presidents' Day serves as an occasion to reflect on the leadership, vision, and enduring impact of those who have guided our nation through its history. Let us use this day not only to pay homage to the foundational leader, George Washington but also to acknowledge the collective contributions of all presidents who have shaped the course of our nation. May this celebration foster a sense of unity and pride in our shared history, encouraging us to learn from the past as we forge a path toward a brighter and more harmonious future.

  • Black History Month stands as an annual tribute with its roots in the United States, gaining official recognition in the U.S. and Canada and extending its reach to Ireland and the United Kingdom in recent times. This observance emerged as a means of commemorating significant individuals and events in the extensive history of the African diaspora. In 1986, Presidential Proclamation 5443 underscored that the primary purpose of Black History Month is to heighten awareness among all Americans regarding the enduring struggle for freedom and equal opportunity. It serves as a poignant reminder of the perseverance and resilience exhibited throughout this historical journey. Black History Month is a celebration that goes beyond the mere acknowledgment of the past; it is a recognition of the rich cultural heritage marked by both triumphs and adversities, which have become integral threads in the tapestry of our nation's history. It stands as a testament to the indelible contributions of the African diaspora, inspiring reflection, education, and a collective commitment to building a future grounded in understanding, equality, and unity.

Executive Director - Georgia Center of Innovation at Georgia Department of Economic Development

Last week was an incredible week for the team at the Georgia Center of Innovation with several of us crisscrossing the state. First, Stephen Shaffer and I participated in the LanzaJet grand opening in Soperton celebrating the world's first ethanol to Sustainable Aviation Fuel plant in Georgia. This facility will provide 10 million gallons of fuel each year. Second, Chris Chammoun had a packed-out Agribusiness Financing Workshop in Albany hosted by our friends at the Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission (Jessica Z.) and the 4C Academy (Chris Hatcher). Lastly, Bryan Weaver hosted a team at Jetaire Group in Fayetteville where we continue to see how technology can transform their business. Go team!

The DOD SkillBridge program is an opportunity for service members to gain valuable civilian work experience through specific industry training, apprenticeships, or internships during the last 180 days of service. Albany Technical College’s programs fall into the Skillbridge category of Employment Skills Training Program. Albany Tech has been approved to offer Firefighter 1 and Commercial Truck Driving through Skillbridge. The DOD Skillbridge agreement is a partnership between the Department of Defense and other organizations aimed at connecting service members and veterans with employment opportunities. Skillbridge enables military personnel to gain valuable work experience during their service or after they transition to civilian life, helping them to make a smooth transition to the private sector. The DOD works with colleges and universities, state workforce agencies, and private sector companies to provide training, education, and employment opportunities to service members. The program is designed to help reduce the skills gap in the U.S. workforce while at the same time providing service members with valuable training and experience.
