Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a historically African American sorority founded by twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University in 1913. The sorority is dedicated to public service with an emphasis on programs that support the African American community. These photos are from one of their recent events, "Defending Equal Opportunity: For Minority & Female-Owned Business" which CEO Rodney Strong attended as a guest speaker. That’s a wrap! SolveIt 2024 has been an incredible convening – thank you to all our speakers and attendees for being so engaged, provocative, insightful and solution oriented. Over the last three days we heard about many of the challenges that affect minority owned small businesses—and there are many—but we also explored opportunities, and strategies for seizing them. The conference may be over, but we are looking ahead, acknowledging that the way forward is difficult but not impossible, drawing inspiration from the others who have gone before us while learning from the challenges they’ve faced. This has truly been a convening to remember, and we are so grateful to everyone who came to Chicago to co-create an inclusive economy with us!  #SolveIt2024 #Interise20years #InteriseNetwork Shout out to our amazing photographer Joe U Photo for helping us capture every moment!

Isn't it funny how we progress, and yet some things stay the same! We're inspired by the work of those who challenge systemic injustice. This image is from The Carolinian newspaper in 1974 and coverage of Atlanta's first black mayor, Mayor Maynard Jackson, upon a visit to his Alma Mater, North Carolina Central University. "Racism remains the most immediate problem of black Americans, while the ultimate problem in this country is the difference between those who have and those who don't," was the main theme of Maynard's speech to graduates in May of that year. Maynard Jackson paved the way for a large number of minority- and women-owned businesses to become part of the economic success of the city. Due to his mayoral efforts, Mayor Jackson is being celebrated by Atlanta's City Hall through 2024, a huge accolade acknowledging his success in uplifting long-underrepresented communities. Recently, Axios covered this celebration, noting that, "in 1970, Atlanta was 51% Black, and yet white businesses historically held more than 99% of the city's contracts for decades." And, City Hall's workforce was as homogenous as its contracts. As Maynard's policies took hold, a radical transformation took place and by the beginning of the 1980s, Axios reports, "minority and women-owned businesses participated in 30% of the city's contracts." And, City Hall's minority representation grew, "from 42% in 1973 to 61% in the decade." Read more: https://shorturl.at/mtQV0

It's been six months since we celebrated this book's launch! If you spend even an hour with CEO Rodney Strong, it will become clear and very quickly just how vital of a role Atlanta, Georgia has played in our history. And how pivotal its role is in the present. As a hub of experience, excellence and inspiration, Atlanta has played a part in progressive policy in support of equitable economic foundations, and that is why it is the firm's hometown. Atlanta and its significance within the cultural and political fabric of this country are the focus of Dr. Jeffrey O. G. Ogbar's book, America's Black Capital: How African Americans Remade Atlanta in the Shadow of the Confederacy. Proud to support Dr. Ogbar, we launched the book last November at the Atlanta History Center and Rodney opened the event and introduced the book and its author. The event was also captured by C-SPAN - watch here https://lnkd.in/eMZRFu4f
